08/20:
NASCAR Hands Out Penalties, Suspensions to Gibbs
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR suspended two Joe Gibbs Racing crew chiefs indefinitely and stripped drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano of 150 points each Wednesday for cheating after last weekend's Nationwide Series race.

Crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Dave Rogers were fined $50,000 each, and five other crew members were suspended indefinitely, but NASCAR decided not to bar the cars from any future races.

After Stewart finished third in Saturday's race at Michigan International Speedway in the No. 20 car and Logano was seventh in the No. 18, inspectors found magnets under the gas pedals of both cars when they were sent to the chassis dyno for examination. NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said the teams were attempting to mask the cars' true horsepower. (ap.google.com)

Gibbs' Nationwide teams caught manipulating NASCAR Test
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Joe Gibbs Racing's two Nationwide Series teams face penalties after NASCAR officials caught them trying to mask engine strength during a dynamometer test after the Carfax 250 at Michigan International Speedway.

Gibbs crew-members placed magnetic spacers on the gas pedal stops of the Toyotas driven by Tony Stewart and Joey Logano after Saturday's race to lower horsepower readings in postrace dynamometer tests. Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, said NASCAR inspectors discovered the shims at the test.

"It was magnets that were about a quarter-inch thick that prevented the accelerator from going 100% wide open," Pemberton said Sunday. "The intention was to manipulate the numbers that we get when we get our information and data off the dyno." (USAToday.com)

08/15: Southern 500 Makes Return to Darlington
NASCAR and International Speedway Corporation made a mistake five years ago when it took the Southern 500 away from Darlington Raceway.

The executives may not admit it, but it was a mistake.

The race that replaced Darlington in California has not drawn well, while Darlington's lone Mother's Day weekend race has sold out every year. And the news is only getting better for NASCAR's oldest superspeedway. Track officials announced this week that next year's May race will reclaim the Southern 500 name. That may not seem like a big deal, but it's huge to the racing traditionalists that crowd the egg-shaped oval's grandstands once a year. (ocala.com)

- Gas-Slurping NASCAR Needs But One Engine Rule
Several decades ago, during another fuel crisis, NASCAR stepped up and reduced the length of some of its races, doing its part to reduce fuel consumption.

At the same time, engine guru Robert Yates looked at the problem from a different angle.

Yates believed NASCAR would be better served to reduce the fuel consumption of the race cars. Yates started working on the issue. (signonsandiego.com)

By JENNA FRYER – 4 hours ago

A former racing official is suing NASCAR for $250 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

Mauricia Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR's second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until she was fired last October.

Grant alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan. (ap.google.com)

Skinner to Replace Allmendinger
NASCAR veteran Mike Skinner will take over AJ Allmendinger's seat at the Red Bull Racing Team with immediate effect, following a disappointing start to the season for the former Champ Car race winner.

Red Bull Racing pulled A.J. Allmendinger from the No. 84 NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota yesterday, replacing him temporarily with Craftsman Truck Series champion Mike Skinner.

"We're at a crossroads where we need to make a change that will elevate the No. 84 team to success," Frye said. "AJ's our guy and he's a talented driver, but there's a lot being asked of him. In order for him to be successful, we have to get this team pointed in the right direction." (torontosun.com)

NASCAR Driver Kahne Sued Over Shoving Incident with Speedway Guard
MIAMI - A security guard filed suit against Kasey Kahne seeking damages for "severe physical injuries" when the NASCAR driver allegedly shoved him to the ground at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Archibald Hutchinson is seeking unspecified damages in excess of US$15,000 in the suit filed Tuesday in the 11th Circuit Court.

Kahne is due in court Jan. 8 to answer charges of misdemeanor battery stemming from the Nov. 16 incident. The maximum sentence for misdemeanor battery is one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

He had no comment on the suit, but Rick Russell, president of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, said the team supports its driver.

"The alleged action in this case is not consistent with the Kasey Kahne we know," Russell said. "It is unfortunate the issue has progressed to this point. We support our driver, Kasey Kahne, and have complete confidence in the legal process." (canadianpress)
